The Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) have formalized a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at significantly boosting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria.

The formal signing ceremony which took place at the NABTEB Headquarters presided over by both CEOs of ITPN led by the National President, Aare Abiodun Odusanwo, and NABTEB, led by the Registrar, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, is a landmark agreement which establishes a collaborative framework for both institutions to leverage their statutory mandates in the regulation, development, assessment and quality assurance of technical and vocational skills.

“This MoU represents a significant step towards professionalizing Nigeria’s travel tourism and hospitality industry. By combining ITPN’s expertise as the premier awarding body for the sector with NABTEB’s national reach in technical examinations, we are creating a formidable synergy to upskill our workforce and ensure they meet global best practices,” stated Aare Odusanwo.

Dr. Mohammed had earlier echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the strategic importance of the collaboration.

“NABTEB is committed to delivering quality assurance and credible certification. This partnership with ITPN will allow us to enhance our assessment frameworks specifically for the travel tourism and hospitality sectors, ensuring that the certifications we award are truly reflective of industry needs and professional standards,” he said.

A key objective of the partnership is to strengthen professional competence and develop robust capacity for training and assessment within the Hospitality, Catering, Travel, and Tourism sectors and it is expected to yield several key outcomes, including:* Curriculum Enhancement: Strengthening curriculum development to align with National Occupational Standards (NOS) and the Nigerian Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).* Professional Certification: Creating credible certification and licensing pathways for practitioners to validate their expertise and enhance career opportunities.*Quality Assurance: Deploying technical and human resources towards the enhancement of skill assessment and quality assurance in the relevant sectors.

A broader outcome of the MoU is its expected high impact on government’s initiatives aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s TVET system to create millions of jobs in the tourism and creative industries as the MoU further lays the groundwork for a comprehensive collaborative framework designed to achieve mutually beneficial objectives and drive the improvement of technical skills across Nigeria.

This bold initiative was taken by the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria as the foremost professional institute and premier awarding body dedicated to advancing standards, ethics and excellence in Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality industry. This is also in furtherance of the recognition by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) as the awarding body for the sector responsible for developing accredited qualifications, approving training institutions and awarding certificates.

NABTEB is a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Education established to conduct examinations, award certificates and provide assessment and quality assurance in technical and vocational education in Nigeria, whose partnership with ITPN will go a long way in enhancing the quality of professionalism through strict adherence to established global standards in the travel tourism and hospitality industry of the country.
